The inspiration for this project stems from the often overlooked crisis of addiction to sugary beverages. To combat this crisis in my own apartment, I developed a system to discourage the consumption of soda by my roommates.
Addiction is visually designed to resemble the consumerist appeal of a Coca-Cola™ vending machine. Yet the imagery of the soda can locked behind bars has the effect of influencing the viewer to subconsciously consider themselves as imprisoned because of their addiction.
In an era where pocket change is increasingly rare, it takes genuine effort for my roommates to locate the mere quarter required to feed their addiction. They begin to ponder if the sugar they crave is truly necessary, and in a small way, the soda addiction crisis is lessened.
